Hackathon: REMIX IoT MOLDOVA: Connect your city

Participate in a competition dedicated to young engineers, developers and enthusiastic Internet of Things solution solvers! Participation in competition is absolutely FREE for the all the participants.

What is “IoT”?

The Internet of Things (IoT) is the network of physical objects—devices, vehicles, buildings and other items—embedded with electronics, software, sensors, and network connectivity that enables these objects to collect and exchange data. The IoT allows objects to be detected and controlled remotely across existing network infrastructures.

What is a “Hackaton”?

A Hackathon is an event in which computer programmers, software developers, graphic designers, interface designers and project managers collaborate intensively on software projects. In our case there is also a hardware component.

Why this Hackaton is named “Remix”?

Because remixing is the art of adding, removing, and/or changing pieces to create something new of a given set of items.

Purpose of the competition:

The purpose is to increase young people's interest for IoT technology and to motivate them into considering future careers in this field. As a follow-up of the competition a community of young engineers, who are passionate about IoT will be created, they will change their attitude from a passive observer to an active user who is able to create new things focused on IoT.

Project Theme:

"Smart Trash bin with votes counting system"

You will be the first ones to bring to life a bin. The task of the competition is to take a bin and change it into an interactive bin with a voting module. In the next step your bin will interact with the other bins so it is necessary to create the network between them. The data should be exchanged with a server for analysis and activation of an alert system in case the bin is full.

You can make it talk, walk, or dance, it's up to you. Overall you get the chance to test yourself and make some important connections in both the IT and engineering world.

Project requirements:

1. General

1.1 The system should be composed of:

  • vote count module
  • bin load module
  • data transmission module
  • one central server, common for all the teams for data analysis

1.2 The system requires at least two adjacent containers for the collection of garbage.

1.3 Containers will be brought by the teams, there are no restrictions on size or shape.

1.4 Teams will be provided for free with “Intel® Galileo Gen 2 Development Board” and a set of sensors required for the implementation of the tasks and place to work 24/24.

1.5 Other things needed (screwdrivers, glue etc.) should be mentioned in the Project Plan at submission. Organizers will do their best to provide these things. If needed objects will not be mentioned in the Project Plan the teams will bring them by themselves.

1.6 It is advisable to eliminate the movable mechanical parts from the structure.

2. Vote count module:

2.1 The device is based on an automated system that takes into account the waste thrown into the container as a unit of account (vote) in relation to the inscriptions on the container (or on the electronic display).

2.2 Questions to identify the preferences should change dynamically, which means you can vote on different issues one after another.

2.3 System operation eliminates manual control or touching the elements of the containers by hand.

3. Bin load module:

3.1 The device should send real-time information on loading of bins.

4. Data transmission and processing:

4.1 Teams will build a common platform for a Central Server which will be linked to the devices over internet.

4.2 The Central server should provide a display of the voting results and launch new automated polls.

4.3 The Central server should process bins load data to reduce costs by optimization of collection routes, adjustment of frequency of collection or others.

As a bonus, when assessing the project will be taken into account:

  • ability of the system to prevent multiple voting by the same person (or the account of his voice with reduction factor);
  • security;
  • vandalism resistance;
  • the ability to work on a self-powered basis;
  • flexibility (the possibility of applying to the different types of containers for the garbage collection);
  • the separation the materials (e.g. bins for paper, plastics, metals) for a better waste management and less impact on ecology
  • contribution of the team in the build of server platform

How to apply:

  1. Create a team (minimum 1 person, maximum 5 people: maker/hardware, product design, back end developer, mobile developer, project managers)
  2. Create the project plan and concept
  3. Submit your project till 29 March at 22.00, here: https://goo.gl/waUqKu
